The movies of Indian Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan - Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Chak De India and Om Shanti Om - have been worldwide successes.
One doesn’t really need to introduce Shahrukh Khan, sometimes also called Shah Rukh Khan, King Khan or SRK for short. The Bollywood superstar has reached worldwide fame and in India, is touted as Amitabh Bhachan’s – the “Big B’s” – successor. He is said to have more admirers than Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis put together. But regardless if one is a fan or not, one has to admire Shahrukh Khan’s versatility throughout his 20-year career as a TV and movie actor and director, especially considering his humble beginnings. Shahrukh Khan’s Early YearsShahrukh Khan was born on November 2, 1965 as the second child of his parents in New Delhi. Khan’s father Taj Mohammed had come to Delhi from Peshawar before India’s Partition in 1947 and his mother Fatima from Rawalpindi, both in what is Pakistan today. Next to sports, Shahrukh Khan was interested in drama since his school days. After his mother’s death in 1991 – his father had succumbed to cancer a decade earlier – Khan moved to Mumbai to make it big in Bollywood. Already in 1992, quite a few movies were released with him in the lead role, with Deewana being the most successful one. Shahrukh Khan’s Life TodayIn October 1991, Shahrukh Khan married his childhood sweetheart Gauri Chibber, with whom he has two children: son Aryan, born in 1997, and daughter Suhana, born in 2000. His wife’s Hindu background and his own Moslem faith don’t cause any problems. At home, the Koran has its place as well as the Indian gods. Already in 2005, the Indian TV-producer Nasreen Munni Kabir made the documentary The Inner and Outer World of Shah Rukh Khan; Still Reading Khan about his family life was produced in 2006. In Mumbai, hardly a day goes by during which there are no fans waiting for a glimpse of him in front of his luxury bungalow Mannat (“god’s gift) in the posh suburb of Bandra. Most PopularShahrukh Khan MoviesGiven the disproportionate amount of movies with Shahrukh Khan released outside of India, one gets the impression that almost every Bollywood movie stars him. But even a busy bee like Shahrukh Khan couldn’t manage this as Bollywood releases about 900 movies per year, that is between two and three movies a day. Here’s a list of the most popular Shahrukh Khan movies abroad:
The Secret of Shah Rukh Khan’s Worldwide SuccessIn the September 23, 2005 BBC-Interview “Who’s the Real Shah Rukh Khan?” by Zubair Ahmed, SRK admitted: "My life may seem glamorous from the outside but off screen it's as ordinary as anyone else's. I want people to know that movie stars live a normal, middle-class life." Asked who runs his life, he answers: "My two children, my family and friends. I do whatever they tell me. I love spending time with them." He continues diplomatically, when asked about his fans, "They run my professional life." No wonder then his popularity continues. In 2007, he replaced Amitabh Bhachan as the host of Kaun Banega Crorepati, India’s version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Not a coincidence then that he introduced Slumdog Millionaire at the Golden Globes this year. Fans can look forward to two movies that he is currently working on: Koochie Koochie Hota Hain and My Name is Khan.
